Edo: Four policemen arrested over businessman"s death

Four policemen from the Special Anti-Robbery squad unit of the Lagos State Police Command have been arrested over the death of a car dealer, Benson Obode, in their custody in Benin City, Edo State.

The four policemen – Adeleke Adedeji, Oniyon Musa, Henry Sobowale, and Abena John had arrested Benson on May 21 and also dumped the corpse of Benson at the Central Hospital Mortuary on same date without informing the family.

Late Benson was arrested for allegedly buying a stolen Ash Colour Peugeot 306.

It is not yet certain how Benson died in police custody but his landlord, Monday Omosigho, who was earlier arrested, said he saw Benson being tortured by the police at the Edo police headquarters.

Lagos State Police Command however told some journalists from a private radio station in Benin City after two months of enquiries that Benson died from ‘mob action’.

Family of late Benson had traveled to Abuja, Portharcourt, Lagos and Kaduna police commands in search of Benson without any knowledge that Benson has been killed.

Police sources told the Nation that the four policemen were being currently being detained in Lagos and would soon be transferred to Benin City.

Elder brother to late Benson, Solomon, said the family has been briefed about the arrest but said they were many unanswered questions like the whereabouts of the N200,000 and ATM cards on his brother the day he was arrested.

Three Boko Haram suspects arrested in Cameroon

Cameroon officials have arrested three suspects carrying a bag containing improvised explosive devices in the northern town of Maroua where a spate of suspected Boko Haram suicide attacks killed at least 40 last week, sources have said.

The men were caught on Thursday evening at the entrance of the city following a tip-off, a senior military source with the Central African nation’s special forces in Maroua told Reuters.

“The suspect who was carrying the bag with the explosives is a Nigerian. The other two are Cameroonians, according to their identity cards,” another senior local government administrator said on telephone from Maroua.

He said the young men, aged about 20, were suspected Boko Haram militants planning another attack.

Cameroon has increased troops and tightened security in the northern regional capital following the suicide bombings, the deepest incursion by suspected Boko Haram militants from neighbouring Nigeria.

Cameroon security officials also carried out a raid on Thursday in Kousseri, some 220 km (140 miles) north of Maroua, where some 2,000 Nigerians who were living in the country without permits were loaded in trucks and taken across the border.

A local administrator said the raid was part of measures aimed at improving security and controlling movements along the border region.

Oshaniwa signs three-year deal with Hearts

Super Eagles defender, Juwon Oshaniwa, has signed a three-year contract with Scottish side, Hearts, after passing his medicals on Friday.

The 24-year-old, capped 17 times by the three-time African champions, left Ironi Ashdod after the team was relegated to the second division, Goal reports.

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson believes the wait for the Nigerian international will be vindicated when he eventually plays his way into the team.

“It has been difficult because we had hoped to get him for pre-season so we could build through there with him but hopefully it will be worth the wait,” Goal quoted Neilson as saying after the deal was concluded.

“We did it last season with [Adam] Eckersley and [Miguel] Pallardo. They were guys who came in after we had started and it’s just part of football and you just have to deal with it.

“Everyone wants to get their full squad in for the first day of pre-season but it never happens like that.

“We are expecting him to do really well for us and it’s usually worth the wait when guys like this come in.

“It has been the longest transfer saga ever. He needs to come in and he needs to train and get to know the players, with a view of next weekend or possibly the midweek game against Motherwell,” he concluded.

Universities" Governing Councils not dissolved - Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved that the Governing Councils of Federal Universities be exempted, for the time being, from the dissolution of Boards of Federal Government Parastatals, Agencies, Institutions and Government-Owned Companies announced on July 16, 2015.

All Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities, according to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, have been informed of the exemption through a circular issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mr. Danladi Kifasi.

NURTW crisis: 2 policemen injured, 44 suspects arrested

Two policemen have been injured following the mayhem that trailed change of leadership by the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Uwvie Chapter in Delta State,
The State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Tina Kalu in statement made available to The Nation on Saturday said the violence which characterised the emergence of Ariyor Francis as Chairman informed the deployment of policemen to the area.
Kalu said a police team was mobilized to the scene but was attacked by protesters at Jakpa junction leading to the shooting of an Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP) in the buttocks.
Part of the statement reads, ‘ On 29/7/2015 at about 0700hr, the Area Commander, Warri received information that following the change of leadership by the National Union of Road Transport workers Union (NURTW) Uvwie chapter, leading to the emergence of one Ariyor Francis ‘m’ as chairman, pockets of violent protests erupted in the area.
” Based on the report, patrol teams were quickly mobilized to the scene, and at Jakpa junction, the protesters shot at the policemen, as a result of which an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was hit on his buttocks by a bullet from one of the protesters. The victim was rushed to central Hospital Warri for treatment. ” Later, the police re-enforced and trailed the protesters to Agofure Motor Park on NPA –DSC express way Warri where the said protesters had gathered to cause more crisis and destruction and arrested forty-four (44) male suspects. Some of the protesters also on the same date at about 1140hrs attacked policemen on duty at Dofect motor park Effurun, shooting sporadically into the air and in the process, a police sergeant was hit by stray bullet on his right elbow. The injured policeman was rushed to Nigeria Navy Hospital Effurun for treatment.”
Kalu said the team following reinforcement trailed the protesters to Agofure Motors along NPA-DSC expressway where they had gathered to cause more crisis.
The police image maker said some of the protesters on the same date attacked another policeman in Effurun on guard duty at Dofecgt Motors sustaining gunshot injuries in his right elbow.
Kalu said normalcy has been restored.
The police, she said, arrested forty four protesters were arrested in connection with the violence.
Kalu said the injured policemen have been rushed to Warri Central Hospital and Nigeria Navy Hospital respectively.
She warned members of the public to respect the laws of the land and refrain from taking laws into their hands
