Former chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, may have been tipped to replace the late Zanna Umar Mustapha as deputy governor of Borno State.
Mustapha died on August 15 while on official engagement in Yola, Adamawa State.
Maina is being tipped for the position by political elders in his native Biu town, even as several other political groups in other parts of the state are reportedly pushing for their preferred candidates.
A statement jointly issued in Abuja by the Biu Emirate political leaders and youth groups on Sunday called on Governor Kashim Shettima to be meticulous in the choice of replacement for the late Mustapha.
The statement warned that any wrong choice could have far reaching socio-economic and political implications on relationships among the diverse interests in the state.
According to his sponsors, Maina remains one of the most brilliant young persons and patriotic civil servants from Borno, saying the state stands to benefit from his rich experience and robust contributions to the economic development of the country.
They described Maina as an “inspiration” to many young men from his native Biu town and will also break the seeming impasse in the lobby by the various interest groups and individuals.
Spokesman of the lobby group, Sule Ibrahim Biu, told journalists in Abuja at the weekend that while Governor Shettima reserves the prerogative of choosing a new deputy, the choice had always been narrowed down to Biu town.
