Abuja protesters not Ndigbo, says Ohanaeze Youth Council

•Alleges plot by group to stage violent protest

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) has dissociated itself from a rally staged at the National Assembly during the week by a group, under the aegis of Ohanaeze Youth Movement, to drum support the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

The OYC said it neither sponsored nor took part in the protest, saying it was a calculated attempt to create tension in the country and bring the name of the group into disrepute.

In a statement signed by the President, the Deputy National Secretary and the Publicity Secretary, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Comrade Stanley Nwanka and Hon. Obinna Adibe respectively, the OYC alleged that the Abuja group was planning to wreak havoc in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, (DSS) to keep watchful eyes on the activities of the group.

“We are indeed shocked and embarrassed over the media reports that Ohanaeze Youth Movement staged protest at the National Assembly. We want to state categorically that at no time did we sit to discuss the current happenings at the National Assembly. We neither sponsored nor took part in any protest under whatever guise. It is for this purpose that we are alerting the general public to the fact that there is nothing like Ohanaeze Youth Movement. The Youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is clearly identified as Ohanaeze Youth Council.

“What happened at the National Assembly was a gathering of some impostors, who were transported to Abuja for some sinister motives. It beats our imagination why they chose to hide under the OYC to satisfy their pay-masters. No true Igbo man or woman could have gone to Abuja to engage in such jamboree on September 29, a day set aside as national Igbo-day celebration. As such, these people are not from Igbo land,” the statement read in part.

It added: “We are aware that before that organized and sponsored protest, one of them, who claims to be a lawyer, went from one television station to the other where he tried to sell his falsehood to unsuspecting members of the public. Having succeeded in deceiving the public for the first time, using the name of Ohanaeze youths, our findings showed that their next plan is to launch a violent attack in Abuja in order to put Ndigbo into disrepute.”
